Mr. Mikey Monkey's 3rd Birthday Party

Saturday was Mikey's 3rd Birthday Party. He asked for a Diego jungle party with animal cupcakes, watermelon, strawberries, and a "peeata" with gum and lollipops. He was so specific, that he made it nice and easy to plan the party. We had a wonderful turn-out with about 30 family and friends.

Here is Mikey's Diego jungle cupcakes. I had actually made cupcakes like this last week for my friend Chadlee's baby shower, and Mikey liked them so much, he wanted them too. I had a lot of practice with the first 48, so the second batch of 48 went nice and quickly. The idea was that each guest could take an animal with them, but Mikey and Jackson were very possessive about them, and not a lot of animals got away.

We ordered a gigantic 36" pizza from a pizza place that just opened up a few weeks ago near our house. I wasn't prepared for how huge it actually would be. It had 60 slices, and we almost polished it off!

We had a Diego bounce house. I think most of the kids spent most of their time in it. A very pregnant Chadlee also spent some time in there with Stella - that might be a nice way to induce labor!

We also had a Diego Pinata. We are usually against pinatas that are shaped like humans or animals, because we don't like to give the kids the idea that it is OK to hit a human or animal with a stick or hammer. In this case though we made an exception. We aren't major fans of Dora or his Cousin Diego, so it was kind of satisfying seeing the kids have at it. After 4 rounds of hitting (without blind folds I might add), Steve Townsend successfully decapitated Diego. Liam Cole was a champion candy grabber and sharer. Mikey still doesn't get the grab what you can mentality, and took one lollipop, unwrapped it and proceeded to eat it. Jeff had to grab a bit for him.

We had to do 2 takes of singing happy birthday to Mikey. He had a little meltdown when he felt his personal space was getting invaded. He pulled out of it great and the kids finally got their cupcakes.

Mikey was thrilled with all of the generous presents that he received. Being the #2 child, he doesn't have a lot of things that are "his," so this was a great treat for him. Liam was a super helper with the unwrapping.

It's kind of noteworthy that Alex and Veronica got Mikey a "HULKY-POKEY" toy, since Alex had an "Andrew-B-Credible-Hulk" birthday when he turned 3 years old. That is now a favorite toy in the house and has a special place on the mantle "to keep him safe."

They boys ended up playing with the new gifts until after their bedtime. They were so excited.

The kids were especially happy to see their extended family. "Brown Grandma" and "White Grandpa" have been going through a major move this past month, so the kids haven't been able to see very much of them lately. We are happy that they were able to make it considering all of the boxes that are still yet to be unpacked!

Charlotte was a trooper. She was cutting her two front teeth all weekend, and spent a lot of time crying in pain. Unfortunately I didn't have a ton of time to hold and coddle her while preparing for the party. She was super happy to have a lot of people to snuggle and bite once the party started.

Alex made it back from Thailand in one piece. Mikey was excited to see "Uncle Awex and Ronca."

We are happy that Aprilanne and her family were able to come too, considering a baby could be arriving any minute. She has a history of delivering babies on Saturday, so it was nice that it wasn't THAT Saturday!

Matt's family brought along a special guest - one of Mikey's oldest cousins, Justin. He is Shauna's oldest son, and has been vacationing in L.A. for the last week.

We are also grateful to all of our friends who were able to show up on such a HOT day. Especially thank you to all 3 pregnant mommys for braving the 90 degree day. Thanks to the Townsends for making the trip across town. Thanks to the Dance family for coming with their 3-week old baby before heading off to a ballet recital. Thanks to the Coles for helping set up and dealing with Charlotte! Sorry Courtney for flashing you when you arrived! Mikey had a blast and loves you all!
